The fastest in the North

Masters Head Season 2021/22

After much disruption over the past season due to Covid, we finally got back to a relative sensible state of normality, with a healthy squad back and hungry for some competitive rowing!

The warm up for the season was at Agecroft Head in October with various crews incl. a win in Masters D eights. Then, following several months of intense training and 5k ergs (plus with intermittent bouts of +VE Covid tests to work around), the squad cemented a core group for the 8+.

This 8+, took a stroll along to Runcorn's Spring Eights Head 6k for what is usually a windy affair. It turned out to be relatively calm conditions - except for the in-boat excitement when overtaking some slow moving traffic. A very enjoyable paddle, made even better with the fastest time of the day!

Next up was taking on the best of the North of England in Chester. Again, after finding an excellent and efficient race rhythm the crew battled well with York, Trafford, Northwich, Grosvenor and others to acquire the accolade of the fastest Masters of the day, winning the division.

The finale of the winter season, saw the 8+ venture down to  Vets Head of the River  on the Tideway in London. Dropping to Masters C due to a work commitment, and needing to manage very different conditions and strong opposition from Molesey and Crabtree, the crew finished fastest provincial crew narrowly beating our perennial rivals from Monmouth, and 10th overall, a squad record.

Now the squad changes gear for the summer season trying out various boat and crew combinations. Let's hope the winter form can be replicated this summer!
